WALLFLOWERS

"Wallflowers" is a visual tribute to women in the arts, a celebration of their growth, and a call to honor their contributions. It explores the quiet strength and enduring spirit of womanhood. The woman, with her back turned, becomes a symbol of collective memory—the blouse blossoming into a field of flowers representing growth and resistance. Her anonymity speaks to the countless women throughout history whose voices were muted, whose contributions to the arts and society were overlooked or dismissed. The flowers are emblems of persistence. Women have long been creators and muses, yet their artistry has often been relegated to the margins of history. In the Renaissance, women were barred from formal artistic training, their talents confined to domestic crafts deemed less significant than the grand canvases of their male counterparts. Even as they broke barriers, women like Artemisia Gentileschi, Mary Cassatt, and Berthe Morisot struggled for recognition in spaces dominated by men. This painting is a reclamation of that narrative. The field of flowers symbolises the blooming of artistic expression despite adversity. Each petal, each stem, is a testament to the resilience of women who, despite historical oppression, have continued to create, inspire, and transform the world around them. The choice to show her back to the viewer represents not submission, but defiance; a declaration that women are no longer seeking validation from the gaze that once diminished them.
